Pre-war cars have this special charm — they sometimes attract sympathy and often amazement!
« How dare he drive something like that! »
As for me, I have always considered these cars as honey pots. The attraction and curiosity they arouse are always filled with sympathy. Despite the fact that they may occasionally suffer from a few oily leaks, pre-war cars remain heritage vehicles, which grants them a certain immunity from those resistant to automobiles.
At Charmhotel, all beautiful cars are cherished, and enthusiasts are warmly welcomed in the various establishments where I have stayed. Indeed, when I suggested that we become partners for my Tour de France in a 1929 Ford A in support of the Apprentis d’Auteuil, I almost immediately found myself with room keys in hand!
Thus, for nearly ten days I travelled across western France, starting from Rochefort-sur-Mer towards Pont-L’Evêque, then passing through Brittany before heading to Bordeaux, Nogaro, Castres, and back again. Around 3,000 km with the desire to visit young people whose family background is not necessarily inclined toward vintage things. Yet these pre-war cars have so much craftsmanship to showcase, so much need for skilled artisans… The opportunities are there, but the candidates are missing.
When you drive a 1929 convertible whose waterproofing resembles that of a sieve and whose doors refuse to close, even when asked nicely, it is truly precious after 6 to 8 hours of driving to arrive at accommodations where you and your car are expected.
Covered parking, spacious garages, and above all, a warm smile at reception! In short, I was charmed. « Mafalda », my Ford, and I are already looking forward to hitting the road again in 2026 for the eastern part of France and the Charmhotel locations along the way.
